Gudhjem - Denmark's only mountain town
Sletten is located in Gudhjem, which, despite its modest size, is one of Bornholm's best-known towns - and probably also one of the most charming. The many small, well-maintained houses, which are built in levels down the steep cliff, give Gudhjem a very special atmosphere. As early as the 1800s, painters made pilgrimages to the city to experience the special "God house light" beyond the horizon, which appears just before sunset. One of the most famous painters, Oluf Høst, has got his own museum in the city - here you have good opportunities to see "the light" and have an art experience out of the ordinary.
Lovely atmosphere at the harbour
The harbor is the center of Gudhjem. Here, the small cafes are buzzing with life. There are daily departures to Ertholmene with the exciting fortress islands of Christiansø and Frederiksø east of Bornholm. At the beginning of the 19th century, Ertholmene was part of a big political game between Sweden, England, Russia and Denmark. The English bombed the islands several times, but the Danish soldiers held their ground, so that the island remained Danish. A trip to Ertholmene is like a trip in a time machine, where you are put 200 years back in time.
Another exciting sailing trip is the trip with the ship Thor, which sails from Gudhjem and down the coast to the beautiful rock formations "Helligdomsklipperne", where the Bornholm Art Museum is also located. While Thor sails back to Gudhjem, you have the opportunity to visit the Art Museum with its impressive collection of Bornholm art - and then you can take a later departure back to Gudhjem, or take the nice walk back along the coastal path.
Life in the 1950s
Back in Gudhjem, a trip to the small fishing lodge "Melsted", which is an extension of Gudhjem, is a wonderful experience. Here you will find the cutest little half-timbered houses as well as a lovely sandy beach. The water is clean and clear. Are you fresh for a swim? Or would you like to see the living agricultural museum "Melsted Gaard", where you can smell, feel and try what life was like on a Bornholm farm in 1950? At Melsted Gaard you will also find Bornholm's Food Culture House, where you can taste many specialties and delicacies from the island's skilled food companies.
Does the round church store the Treasure of the Knights Templar?
Bornholm is also known for its round churches, and the largest round church is in Østerlars just outside Gudhjem. Historians have proven that the Bornholm round churches are in the same patterns as the churches of the secret order of the Knights Templar in France, and that Bornholm had contact with the Knights Templar. Up until the 14th century, the Knights Templar had enormous power and great wealth, but in a conflict with the French king Philip IV in 1307, the Knights Templar had to flee with their treasures. The enormous treasures have never been found. Geotechnical investigations show that there is a large man-made cavity under Østerlars Rundkirke. Could it be the hiding place for the Knights Templar's treasure? And why must the cavity not be examined? Take a walk in the beautiful church and feel the whir of history.
One of Denmark's most beautiful mini golf courses
Just opposite Østerlars Round Church, you can also experience the sound of wings, but it is not the sound of history, but the sound of mini golf clubs playing on one of Denmark's most beautiful mini golf courses. The 18 holes are shaped like the Bornholm nature, and even if you don't normally play mini golf, the course is a fun experience.
