A lovely holiday in Nexø
The holiday home Ellehuset is located at the small fishing village of Balka, which lies between Snogebæk and Nexø, which is Bornholm's second largest city - and when you live in Ellehuset you must of course also experience Nexø:
Restaurants and cafes are close to you
Nexø offers several cozy cafes and restaurants. Relax with a good cup of coffee at Cafe Guldbønnen, or have lunch at the cozy H8 restaurant, which is set up in a building that in the old days were used by the harbor weigher at Nexø harbour. At H8 you will be spoiled with wonderful tapas dishes and good sandwiches. Next to restaurant H8 is an art gallery, which welcomes you inside with beautiful glass art and ceramics.
Exciting experiences at Nexø Museum
Look forward to exciting experiences at Nexø Museum and learn all about Nexø's history with a special focus on fishing and not least World War II, where Nexø became an important piece in the big political game.
Market days and cozy market atmosphere
By the harbor you will find the square, “Skippertorvet”, where you in the summer can experience a flea market. It is a popular event for both locals and tourists. Visit the cozy stalls, where you will be tempted by good offers while listening to cozy live accordion music.
The Bornholm Railways and Butterflies
In today’s world, cars, buses, and bicycles bring the local residents and tourists around the island, but until the 1960s, railways were a large part of Bornholm's transport routes. At the railway museum in Nexø you can explore Bornholm's railway history. Back to the present, you can continue to Bornholm's Butterfly Park, where you can experience the most beautiful butterflies in a tropical climate.
Martin Andersen Nexø
The author Martin Andersen Nexø - who wrote, among other things, “Ditte, Child of Human” and “Pelle the Conqueror” - grew up in Nexø. Today, his birthplace has been converted into a museum, which offers exciting photographs, paintings and stories about the author's life and works. Take a walk in the author's footsteps on the 6.6 kilometer long poet's route, which starts and ends at the Martin Andersen Nexø museum. The poet route takes you past 8 stops, each of which offers live audio narrations about the author's life and literature. After lots of experiences, maybe you need some lunch? There are many good cafes and restaurants in Nexø...but a good tip is Nexø Smokehouse, which offers a wide selection of smoked products (also other than fish). At Nexø Smokehouse you get delicacies at a high level at reasonable prices.
The Hills of Paradise
In the novel “Pelle the Conqueror”, Pelle guards cows in the Paradise Hills. Back then, Pelle probably didn't have time to enjoy the beautiful area - but we hope you will have time for that. The Paradise Hills offers a fairytale-like nature with rocky landscapes, small fissure valleys and hiking blocks from the Ice Age. Be sure to tie your laces well before you leave home, as the name suggests, the Paradise Hills is a very hilly area. In the Paradise Hills you can see one of Bornholm's seven castles, Gammelborg, and one of Bornholm's largest rocks. Try to see if you can make it wiggle with just a slight movement of your hand.
Brændesgårdshaven
If you are travelling with children, they will love to experience Bornholm's large amusement park "Brændesgårdshaven". Once the entrance has been paid, all rides are free - and you can look forward to slides, mini-zoo, mini-golf, climbing areas, carousels and much, much more.
